Year-in-review news roundups are one of my favorite parts of December. I really enjoy remembering all of the interesting and inspiring things that happened over the past year, especially after a rough year like this one. I especially enjoy “top science news of the year” roundups, and I was pleased to see marine science stories make the cut on many of them. For your “but why is this considered a top story but that isn’t” debating pleasure, here are the marine science news stories that made top science news stories of the year listicles!

Greenland shark’s amazing longevity. Listicles including this story: The Guardian’s 12 Most Important Science Moments of 2016, Altmetric’s top 100 articles of the year (#29)

All time low sea ice. Listicles including this story: The Guardian’s 12 Most Important Science Moments of 2016, Science News’ Top Science Stories of 2016.

Great Barrier Reef bleaching. Listicles including this story: Nature’s Science Events that Shaped the Year, Also Dr. Terry Hughes was one of Nature’s 10 people who mattered this year for his reef conservation.

The Ross Sea Marine Reserve. Listicles including this story: Nature’s Science Events that Shaped the Year.

The discovery of medieval shipwrecks. Listicles including this story: New York Times Science News that Stuck With Us in 2016,

The discovery of an ancient marine crocodile fossil. Listicles including this story: National Geographic’s Science Discoveries Worth Celebrating in 2016.

The ocean, and sharks in particular, were featured in Nature’s Best Science Images of the Year and Buzzfeed’s 27 of the Most Amazing Science Photos of 2016.

Smithsonian Magazine created their own list of the Top Eight Ocean Stories of 2016.

Finally, I would be remiss in not honoring the axillary bream, the Onion’s 2016 fish of the year.

(Year-in-review science news roundups that didn’t include any marine science stories include: Newsweek’s Top Science and Health Stories, the BBC’s Amazing Science Stories from 2016, Science’s Breakdown of the Year, New Scientist’s 12 Biggest and Best Science Stories of 2016, Mental Floss’ Top 10 Science Stories of 2016, Digital Journal’s What you Should Know About the Top Science Stories of 2016, WIRED’s Biggest Science Stories of 2016.)
