Five years ago, a small team of ocean scientists, conservationists, sea turtle patrollers, and distillers came up with a radical idea to create a sustainable, long-term funding model for Dominica’s Sea Turtle Conservation Organization and Ocean’s Forward. From dozens of meetings, market analyses, and viability assessments, the Rosalie Bay Distillery was born.
The distillery would be one part conservation center of excellence, providing training, expertise, and support to Dominica’s conservation community, and one part rum distillery, producing top-shelf single rum. Unlike other programs where breweries and distilleries donate a portion of their profits to worthwhile cause, the Rosalie Distillery is owned by the NGO. All revenue generated from rum sales goes to fund programs that protect marine animals and their habitats in the Caribbean.
The farm-to-flask model also provides income for Dominica’s sugar cane growers and long-term employment for the distillery workers. Rosalie Bay Distilling supports ocean conservation while providing employment opportunities, creating a win-win for the people and marine animals of Dominica.
And now, after years of work overcoming tremendous obstacles and discovering new and novel challenges, the Rosalie Bay Distillery is open for business. The first batch of Sperm Whale Reserve can be purchased online, directly though Burlington Wine and Spirits in Massachusetts, or from Nature Island Dive in Dominica. More distributors will be added in 2025.
Note: While I have poured my heart and soul into this project, I do not have a financial stake in the Distillery or the NGO. This project is designed to enrich conservation in Dominica for Dominicans.
